No. 19 Pacific Knocks Off No. 5 California, 4-0
Feb. 3, 2002
STOCKTON, Calif. - No. 5 California lost, 4-0, to No. 19 Pacific at Bill Simoni Field on Sunday afternoon. With the win the Tigers start the season off at 1-0, while the Golden Bears fall to 2-1 on the year.
The most serious threat to break up the shutout came in the fourth inning when Jessica Pamanian reached second base on an error and appeared to have advanced Chelsea Spencer to third with one out. However, after an appeal she was called out after failing to touch second base. Pitcher Cindy Ball got out of the inning by getting the next batter to pop out to third base.
In the bottom of the fifth the Tigers took control of the game as freshman third baseman Kristen Allen delivered a solo home run to put Pacific up, 1-0. The Tigers added three more runs to go up 4-0 in the sixth inning on an RBI double from junior center field Estee Okumura and back-to-back bases loaded RBI walks to junior second baseman Aloha Yamaguchi and freshman catcher Ashlie DErrico.
After defeating Sacramento State Saturday, 3-2, senior All-American Jocelyn Forest gave up five hits and two runs in five and a third innings to pick up the loss and drop to 1-1 on the season.
Up next for Cal is the Fiesta Bowl Tournament hosted by Arizona State, Fri., Feb. 8 to Sun. Feb. 10.
