No. 19 Women's Gymnastics Defeats Cal, 195.025-191.525
Feb. 3, 2002
BERKELEY, Calif. - Arizona State's 19th-ranked women's gymnastics team should move up in the national rankings this week after defeating California 195.025-191.525 in front of a crowd of 241 at the Recreational Sports Facility Field House in Berkeley, Calif., Sunday.
The Sun Devils' second-highest team total of the year and their best road score propelled them to 2-2 on the season, 1-2 vs. Pac-10 opponents. Cal dropped to 3-2 overall.
Leading the Sun Devils against the Golden Bears was sophomore All-American Maggie Germaine. First on the uneven bars, Germaine combined with senior Rhonda Robinette for meet-high scores of 9.85, before moving to vault where her score of 9.825 led all competitors.
On the floor exercise, her 9.85 was second only to teammate Kari Muth, but Germaine's struggles continued on balance beam where she suffered a fall for the fourth time in as many meets this season. Still, her 38.700 all-around total was good enough to lead the field.
Despite Germaine's fall, ASU had its best meet of the season on beam hitting five of six routines for a team total of 48.975. Rhonda Robinette earned a meet-high score of 9.85, followed by freshmen Muth and Trisha Dixon at 9.8
On the other hand, ASU was sub-par on floor, getting three solid scores from Muth (9.875), Germaine (9.85) and sophomore Carla DeMartini (9.8), but otherwise scoring no better than Cassidy Vreeke's 9.55.
ASU's win was its 22nd regular season dual triumph over Cal in 24 tries dating back to the schools' first meeting in 1979. Sunday, the Sun Devils outscored the Golden Bears in all four events.
The Sun Devils return home this Friday, February 8, to host the annual UNO's Classic at Wells Fargo Arena. Cal State Fullerton, Oregon State and Southern Utah will be on hand to challenge ASU at 7:00 p.m.
