Wrestling Upended By No. 10 Arizona State
Feb. 3, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Oregon wrestling team fell 30-11 to the No. 10 Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe, Arizona on Sunday. The Ducks are 5-6 overall, 2-3 in Pac-10 action.
Oregon started strong, winning a 7-6 decision by junior Casey Hunt over Arizona State's Quinn Foster in the opening match at 149 pounds. The Ducks looked to continue the momentum with back to back wins by senior Eugene Harris at 165 pounds and freshman Shane Webster at 174. Harris picked up a 3-1 decison over ASU's Nick Frost. Webster earned a big technical fall win over Sun Devil Chris Petrie, 18-2.
The Ducks were hindered by a forfeit at 125 pounds, and faced some close losses. At heavyweight, Oregon junior Eric Webb was narrowly defeated by ASU's Kellan Fluckiger, 3-2 in the overtime tiebreaker.
'The dual score wasn't indicative of how close it was,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'We had some matches where we were in the position to win. In the loss, our guys are looking at where they need to be to make a run at the Pac-10 conference title.'
The Ducks (5-6, 2-3) will host UC Bakersfield and Fresno State on Feb. 8, 2002 at McArthur Courth in Eugene, Ore.
