Duck Golfers Tied for Tenth after First Round of Ping Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. - Oregon senior Aaron Byers finished in the top 20, shooting one under par to stand tied for 11th place after the first round of the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate at The Raven at Sabino Springs, a 6,776-yard, par-71 facility.

The Ducks shot a 290 and trail the leader and defending tournament champion No.1 Southern California by nine strokes. No. 18 New Mexico placed second , one stroke behind USC, followed by Oklahoma State at 283 and Pepperdine at 286.

Individually, senior Chris Heniff, a transfer from Portland State in Portland, Ore., shot a career-low round of 72, tying for 24th. Heniff earned a previous low round of 73 at the Northwest Collegiate Classic last fall. Duck sophomore Mike Sica, who scored a low-round of 79 in his last competition at the Northwest Collegiate, shot 36-36-72 to finish one over-par in the first round.

'Today we played so-so,' said Oregon head coach Steve Nosler. 'We ended up depending on Chris [Heniff] and Mike [Sica] and they came through for us.'

Play was suspended in the second round at 6:15 p.m. due to darkness. About two-thirds of the field still has holes to play, and some groups will finish two holes before the third round begins.

Second round play resumes Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 a.m. and the final round will follow at approximately 8:30 a.m.
