Mendiola Named Pac-10 Basketball Player of the Week

Walnut Creek, Calif. - Washington sophomore guard Giuliana Mendiola has been named the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 28-Feb. 3, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Mendiola, from Lake Forest, Calif., averaged 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and just 1.0 turnover in leading the Huskies to a road sweep of USC and UCLA. The sweep was Washington's first of the Los Angeles schools since 1996, with UW posting its first win in Pauley Pavilion since 1997. In her homecoming, Mendiola shot a combined 63.2 percent from the field (12-of-19), was 3-of-8 from beyond the arc (.375) and finished 7-of-10 from the foul line.
In the Huskies' 69-63 win at USC, Mendiola scored 20 second-half points, finishing with a career-high tying 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting (.818). She connected on 2 of 3 three-pointers, contributed six assists and two steals and committed just two turnovers in 33 minutes of play. In the 68-48 win at UCLA Feb. 3, she led UW with 12 points, a game-high eight rebounds and no turnovers in 32 minutes of play. She added three steals and two assists against the Bruins.
With the two victories last week, Washington propelled itself to 8-4 in Pac-10 play (13-8 overall), four games back of first-place Stanford and just one-half game behind Arizona State (18-6, 9-4). The Huskies host Arizona at 7 p.m. Thursday and the Sun Devils at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bank of America Arena.
The Player of the Week honor is the first of Mendiola's career and the 18th all-time selection for Washington.
