Mike Montgomery Press Conference Quotes
Feb. 5, 2002
On Oregon's team on the road:
'They are very good at home and shoot the ball well. They are confident and get a lot of energy from their crowd. Hopefully they are not as good on the road. I am sure they will still play hard, but hopefully not as confident. The are playing together well right now and are a huge threat to win the Pac-10.'
On play on the road:
'You need experience, leadership and guys that will step up on the road. The experience level of a player helps when you are on the road.'
On the team's moral:
'It was a tough loss, but we played hard. The team gets over it quicker than the coach does. They were very receptive on Monday and we were trying to put the loss into perspective and look at the things that we did wrong. We do realize that we are a good team and have had a chance to win some of those games. We can still accomplish the things that we want to.'
On the game being important because Oregon is in first-place:
'The game is important because it is the next game. You have to continue to go back and play hard for every game. A lot of teams are still in the running for things and you have to win your games at home because it is so tough to win on the road.'
On winning the conference:
'It will always be important to us to win the conference. That to me is the real test, winning the conference in the regular season. That is the best test on who is the best, not the tourney.'
On Tony Giovacchini's play:
'He is important to us. Tony is steady and has good leadership abilities. We are not getting scoring at the four position, so you need more scoring from someone else and Tony is not necessarily a scorer. You have to get as many people on the floor that can score.'
On Josh Childress:
'Josh is a young freshman and sometimes the match-ups are too hard for him. He had to guard Luke Walton last week and that was a tough situation for him. He has to gain confidence and step up and make shots. Josh is one of those players that will come back and shoot the ball regardless if he has made his first shot or not. He is realizing now the intensity of the league and our program.'
On defending Oregon's Luke Jackson:
'He was awfully good last time, that is what makes Oregon tough. He made some hard shots, which made him difficult to guard. We have to do a good job and sustain position.'
On being 6-0 when Julius Barnes scores 15 or more points:
'When Julius is good, that is just one more guy scoring which makes him better.'
On Julius or Tony being a better defender:
'Julius is quicker, but Tony is a good position rebounder. Julius is quick off his feet and works hard. He has done a pretty good job this year.'
On Teyo Johnson's shot selection:
'When he makes them, fine. He has a lot of confidence and I would like him to be more fundamentally sound. I would be happy with him driving to the basket against a smaller player. He has to be more fundamentally sound not be so obvious.'
On losing close games to USC and Arizona:
'We just got tired against Arizona. They stepped it up and we had some breakdowns. We missed some rebounding opportunities and fatigue set in. Arizona is physical and they are smart. USC was a change of tempo and we let down mentally.'
On Curtis Borchardt:
'We are going to him more and using him as a focal point. He has missed a lot a lot of shots, but that is part of his improvement - to recognize and finish the play. His legs are not strong enough yet, and that will be a huge when he can explode through people and finish.'
On the Pac-10 Tournament:
'We are just going to take one game at a time and try to win one game after another. We are going to try to get enough wins for the NCAA Tournament before the conference tournament. We will try to win the Pac-10 but we want to win right now.'
On the personality of the team:
'We have some characters on this team. They are a good group trying to figure it out and develop leadership.'
