UW Competes in Women's National Team Indoor Tennis Championships

MADISON, Wisc. - The 11th-ranked Washington women's tennis team competes this week in the prestigious National Team Championships for the second straight season, beginning Thursday at Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The 16-team competition runs Feb. 7-10 in Madison, Wis. Washington has a first-round encounter Thursday (Feb. 7) against No. 14 Wake Forest in a rematch of last season's meeting in the same tournament. The Huskies registered a 4-3 second-round victory over the Deacons at last year's Indoor Championships.
The UW-Wake Forest victor meets the winner of the No. 1 Stanford-No. 73 Wisconsin match-up. Two-time defending indoor champion Stanford also won the 2001 NCAA outdoor title. The Cardinal won 63 of their last 64 matches and will be looking to win a third straight National Team Indoor title. Stanford, which beat Georgia 4-3 in last year's final, has won a record six titles at this event.
Fourteen of the 16 teams in Madison are in listed in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) top 20. Second-ranked Duke, No. 4 Vanderbilt and No. 5 Georgia are also among this week's favorites.
The Huskies are undefeated in dual-match play this season, having opened the season with four straight victories at home. All four wins were against ranked opponents, including, No. 26 Alabama, No. 29 Washington State, No. 44 San Diego State and No. 63 Boise State.
Washington completed its finest season last year with a No. 11 ranking in the final poll. The Huskies advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 2001 NCAA outdoor championships for the first time ever.
