Lalum Leads Huskies in 77-73 Pac-10 Win

Feb. 7, 2002

BANK OF AMERICA ARENA - Husky sophomore Andrea Lalum added 10 points to a career-high 13 rebounds, and Washington withstood a late Arizona rally, to take a 77-73 win over the Wildcats before 2,988 fans at Bank of America Arena.

The Huskies (14-8, 9-4) led by as many as 13 points in the second half, taking a 71-58 edge with 5:34 to go on an eight-foot jumper by Emily Autrey. The Wildcats (11-12, 7-7), however, strung together a 13-4 run over the next four minutes, cutting the lead to two, 75-72, on a long three-pointer by Dee-Dee Wheeler with 30 seconds remaining.

Following a free throw by the Huskies' Giuliana Mendiola at the 20-second mark, Arizona had one last chance to tie, but a deep three-point attempt by Wheeler hit the front of the rim, and Washington coralled the rebound and the victory.

The win was the fourth in a row for Washington, its longest streak of the season, and improved the team to 21-6 all-time at Bank of America Arena, including a 12-2 home record in Pac-10 play.

Four Huskies scored in double figures, including the second-consecutive 20-point game from junior Loree Payne, who finished with 22. In addition to Lalum -who became the first Husky to record double-digit rebounds since Dec. 9 against Michigan - Emily Autrey (15 points) and Mendiola (14) each reached double figures in scoring.

Forward Elizabeth Pickney led all Arizona scorers with 22 points, while senior center LaKeisha Taylor tallied a double-double with 16 points and a career-best 17 rebounds.

'We're really excited to get this victory,' said sixth-year head coach June Daugherty. 'We knew it would be a matter of time before Arizona made a run. This team stepped up, there was no panic. We had great leadership on the floor.'

The Huskies struggled early, falling behind in the games opening minutes before rallying to a 39-28 halftime lead on the strength of 11 points by Payne, including a pair of three-pointers.

Washington hosts the Pac-10's second-place team, Arizona State (19-6, 10-4) Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bank of America Arena. The annual Alumni Game will be played prior to the contest, beginning at 10 a.m.
