Gymnasts Tie Arizona State, 195.800, To Win Uno's Classic

Feb. 8, 2002

TEMPE, Ariz. - It came down the wire, and it ended in a tie.

The Oregon State gymnastics team had season-highs on every event to post a season-best 195.800 to tie Arizona State for first place at the Uno's Classic on Friday. Cal State Fullerton was third with a 194.975, while Southern Utah took fourth with a 192.375.

It was a seesaw battle between the Beavers and the Sun Devils all night. After having to count a fall on beam in the second rotation, the Beavers dropped into third place at the halfway point. ASU ended up having to count two falls of their own on beam, while OSU cruised to a season-high 49.475 on floor in the third rotation. With ASU's falls, the Beavers headed into the final rotation with a slim 0.625 lead over the Sun Devils.

The Beaver vaulters came through with a season-high 48.850 but had to wait for the final three ASU floor performers before the outcome would be decided. ASU ended with a 49.475, good to tie OSU in the final standings.

'We're looking more and more solid and confident every week,' said coach Tanya Chaplin. 'They really fought after beam. Floor came close to one of our highest scores ever, and the vaulters were excellent. That's the best I've seen them do this year.'

Annie Campbell won the all-around with a season-best 39.425 and ended up winning vault (9.875) and tying for first on floor as well (9.95). She also had a 9.825 on bars to go along with a 9.775 on beam.

Tanya Ricioli also had a strong competition for the Beavers. She eclipsed the 39.0 mark for the first time this year, scoring a career-high 39.300 to take third in the all-around. Ricioli had a 9.90 on floor, a career-high 9.85 on bars, a 9.825 on beam and a 9.725 on vault.

Jerra Lopez tied Campbell for first on floor with her 9.95 score, giving Lopez her third floor win of the season. OSU also got a win from Elizabeth Jillson, who scored a 9.90 on bars for the third time this year for her third victory of the season.
