No. 9 Softball Rallies To Beat No. 15 Florida State, 6-4
Feb. 8, 2002
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The ninth-ranked Washington softball team broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, defeating the No. 15 Florida State Seminoles, 6-4, Friday at the Seminole Softball Complex. With the win, Washington remained perfect in 2002, improving to 7-0 overall and 2-0 at the Seminole Challenge.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, UW sophomore Nicole Wicks (Renton, Wash.) belted a bases-loaded single to center field to drive in senior Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.) from third. Junior Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) and freshman Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.), who both reached base on walks, also scored on the play, as Wicks' hit went under the centerfielder's glove for a two-base error.
Florida State (4-2) got one run back in the third, before Wicks knocked her second home run of the season over the left field fence to give the UW a two-run lead at 4-2.
The Seminoles caught up in their next at-bat in the fifth, scoring one run on an RBI single from Brandi Stuart and another when Stuart stole two bases and then came across to score on a UW throwing error.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Huskies scored two runs all with two outs, stringing together three straight singles, following a lead-off walk. UW sophomore Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.) drove in the first run with an RBI single up the middle and later scored on a single to center field by Simpson.
UW sophomore pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) improved to 4-0 on the season after pitching three innings in relief of Husky starter Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.). Florida State pitcher Leslie Malerich took the loss to fall to 2-1 in 2002.
The Huskies will be back in action for a single game Saturday versus Louisville at 3 p.m. as the Seminole Challenge continues with day two action.
