UC Davis Defeats Wrestling 22-15
Feb. 8, 2002
Davis, CALIF. - Stanford (9-8, 2-4 Pac-10) fell to the Aggies tonight in Davis, 22-15. Freshman Matt Gentry (Grants Pass, OR/North Valley) tallied his team-leading 30th win of the season, but Stanford recorded only four wins, falling short to UC Davis.
Gentry, ranked second in the Pac-10 at 149, notched his 15th dual victory tonight over Aggie freshman Cooper Fouch with a 10-2 major decision. Stanford's other top-ranked wrestler in the Pac-10, senior Levi Weikel-Magden (Boardman, OR/Riverside) took a major decision over Jeremiah Jarvis at 157. Weikel-Magden, ranked fourth in the conference, handed third-ranked Jarvis a 10-2 loss to help put the Cardinal in striking distance of Davis.
Junior Brad Selby (Paradise Valley, AZ/Saguaro) was awarded one of the team's three major decisions of the night with an 11-3 win over Flynn Ficker at 285 and freshman Brad Metzler (Omaha, NE/Westside) added a 6-3 decision for Stanford. With the Aggies leading 16-15 going into the final bout, the Cardinal had the chance to close the gap, but with 21 seconds remaining Stuart Young pinned junior Harold Penson (Richmond Heights, OH/Richmond Heights) to secure the UC Davis victory.
Stanford closes out its dual season on Sat., Feb. 16 in Burnham Pavilion at 7 p.m. against Portland State. The Cardinal will then travel to Corvallis, Oregon for the Pac-10 Championships on Mar. 2-3.
