Beavers Edged By Washington

Feb. 9, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State won eight of the day's 14 events but the Beavers were edged by Washington 132-130 in Pacific-10 women's swimming Saturday at Stevens Natatorium. OSU (7-5 overall, 0-4 Pacific-10) wrapped up its dual meet season with the loss and now begins preparing for the Pacific-10 Championships, which will be held Feb. 28-March 2 in Long Beach, Calif.

The Beavers nearly grabbed their first-ever dual meet win over the Huskies (5-2, 1-2), taking the lead into the day's final event and needing a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay to secure the victory. However, Washington took the top two places in the race, edging OSU by .38 of a second for second place.

'We got so many breaks during the meet, they were due for some, too,' OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. 'Washington was competing with a lot more swimmers (24 to OSU's 18), and we had a couple of injuries that kept us from being where we normally are.

'But I'll remember some great things from this meet, and I think our team will, too. Our performance today was indicative of what college swimming is all about. We rose to the occasion and we came up a little short, but I'm proud of our effort. This was the best meet of the season, and maybe the best of my (six-year) coaching career.'

OSU junior Naya Higashijima wrapped up her regular season with three more wins, taking the 1,000 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle. Higashijima placed first in 31 of her 34 dual-meet races this season.

Oregon State also got three wins from sophomore Birte Steven, in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and individual medley, while Suzanne Starkey won the 100 butterfly. Also, the 200 medley relay team of Starkey, Steven, Bonnie Renwick and Kristin Huston placed first to begin the day for OSU.

The Beavers took the early lead, but Washington's strength in the sprint freestyle and backstroke events gave them a 96-73 advantage after nine events. Steven's win in the 200 breaststroke started a run of four straight Oregon State wins, though, and when Steven and Mari Embertson finished one-two in the 400 IM the Beavers led 128-117 heading into the final event.

That's when Washington's depth in the freestyle sprints again came into play, as the Huskies' teams held off the Beavers' final effort in the 200 freestyle relay for the dual meet win.
