Bruins Down Texas 11-0, Nebraska 6-1 at Fiesta Bowl Classic
Feb. 9, 2002
PHOENIX, AZ - The second-ranked UCLA softball team improved its 2002 record to 7-0 on Saturday with wins over Texas and Nebraska at the Fiesta Bowl Classic. The Bruins opened the day with an 14-0 run-rule win over Texas, in which Amanda Freed pitched the 79th no-hitter in Bruin history, then followed with a 6-1 victory over No. 12 Nebraska.
In the first game of the day, the Bruins came out of the gate with a run in the top of the first inning, and then chased Longhorn starting pitcher Cat Osterman by the second inning. Eight Bruins crossed the plate in the second inning, with 14 Bruins stepping to the plate. UCLA would add two more runs in the third and three in the fourth inning for the 14-0 win.
All of UCLA's 11 hits in the game were singles, as a strong wind was blowing straight in from centerfield to the plate throughout both games. Freed hit one batter and there was one Bruin error in the game.
Against Nebraska, neither team got on the board before the third inning, when Natasha Watley singled, was wild pitched to third and scored on an RBI single by Tairia Mims. UCLA added three runs in the fourth, with Monique Mejia, Stephanie Ramos and Watley crossing the plate in the inning. Watley and Mims each had a double in the game, while pitcher Keira Goerl struck out eight while walking one.
UCLA completes its play at the Fiesta Bowl Classic on Sunday morning, with an 8 am first pitch against Utah State and a 10 am first pitch against Southwest Texas State.
