Husky Track Rocks Record Books, Rolls to Victories at UW Invitational
Feb. 9, 2002
DEMPSEY INDOOR -
For the second-consecutive week, Washington sophomore Eric Garner shattered an indoor school record, and freshman pole-vaulter Kate Soma broke her own UW mark as Washington rallied to 10 dual-meet victories in the University of Washington Invitational at Dempsey Indoor.
Garner, who last week became Washington's top indoor miler of all-time, ran the 3,000-meters in 8 minutes, 2.56 seconds to break the school mark of 8:06.57 set by David Bazzi in 2001. Garner's time bested the NCAA provisional-qualifying standard by nearly eight seconds, and currently ranks 15th in the nation in 2002.
Also in a record-breaking mood was true freshman Soma, who shattered her own school record of 12-feet 5 1/2 inches with a vault of 12-11 1/2, good for third in the star-studded pole vault event. In just four meets this season, Soma has raised the school record nearly a foot, to 12-11 1/2 from 12-0 3/4 entering the season. The mark bettered the NCAA provisional-qualifying standard and moved Soma up to 19th in the nation in 2002.
In all, the 16th-ranked Husky men earned victories in four events to sweep four dual meets and improve to 11-1 in duals in 2002. Washington's women's squad, ranked 18th nationally, won six of seven duals to improve to 14-2, defeating No. 28 Oregon 78-70 in the rubber match of a three-meet set between the two Northwest rivals, and falling to No. 8 Cal State-Northridge, 91-66.
Also highlighting the meet's performances was that of former Husky pole vaulter Matt Phillips, who cleared 18-feet, 4 1/2 inches to qualify for the U.S. National Championships in June.
After competing at home for four of the first five weeks of the 2002 season, Washington takes a road trip to Idaho for the Vandal Invitational, Sat., Feb. 16, before returning home Mar. 2 for the UW Indoor/Outdoor Last Chance Qualifier, featuring the nation's best as they compete for qualifying marks for the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships.
