Men's Swimming Falls To Stanford, 156.5-84.5
Feb. 9, 2002
USC junior Erik Vendt broke a pair of pool records, including the oldest one in the book, on a day when 10 pool records were shattered, but the Trojans still fell to No. 1 Stanford, 156.5-84.5, on Saturday (Feb. 9) at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium.
USC dropped to 4-5 while Stanford improved to 7-1.
Vendt won the 1000y free in 8:49.59, breaking former Trojan Mike O'Brien's mark (8:49.71) set in 1985, the longest standing men's pool record. Vendt came back later in the meet to do it again, winning the 500y free in 4:19.83, eclipsing his own record (4:20.48) set in 1999.
USC sophomore Klete Keller broke the second-oldest men's pool record by winning the 200y free in 1:36.10, an NCAA automatic qualifying time. He broke Thomas Fahrner's mark of 1:36.96 set in 1986. Keller was second in the 500y free in 4:19.96, which was also under the old pool record that Vendt broke.
Stanford, however, did most of the damage on Saturday, breaking eight pool records.
Sophomore Michael Bruce did it twice, setting pool records in both the 100y breast (54.75) and the 200y breast (1:56.93). Only the 200, however, lasted beyond the day. Bruce broke recent Trojan alumnus Ryosuke Imai's mark in the 100 (55.56) and former Cardinal swimmer Tom Wilkens' mark in the 200 (1:58.86).
Imai, though, who still trains with USC and was on hand for the meet, swam an exhibition swim after Bruce's performance and reset his own mark in 54.10.
Other Stanford swimmers who set pool records were Randall Bal in the 50y free (20.06), Peter Marshall in the 100y back (46.55, NCAA automatic), Bobby O'Bryan in the 100 fly (48.13), Markus Rogan in the 400y IM (3:45.57, NCAA automatic) and Jayme Cramer in the 200y fly (1:45.97).
USC senior Tamas Kerekjarto posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time in finishing second in the 400y IM in 3:46.04.
Stanford's Adam Peterson won both springboard events in the diving portion of the competition held last week.
USC isn't action again until the 2002 Pac-10 Championships March 7-9 at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Calif.
