No. 9 Softball Wins Eighth Straight With A 7-0 Shutout Of Louisville
Feb. 9, 2002
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Washington freshman Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.) had four RBI as the University of Washington softball team blanked Louisville 7-0 Saturday at the Seminole Softball Complex. With the win, the ninth-ranked Huskies, who had a season-high 13 hits, improved to 8-0 overall and a perfect 3-0 at Florida State's Seminole Challenge.
The UW got on the board early as Husky senior Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.) ripped a lead-off triple to left field and then scored on sophomore Amanda Oleson's (Agoura Hills, Calif.) single to center field. Oleson came across for the team's second run on a pair of back-to-back singles by junior Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) and Rivera.
The Huskies added three more in the third with two coming on an RBI-single by Rivera and the other on a throwing error by Louisville catcher Lisa McMillian. Rivera eventually struck again in the top of the seventh, as pinch hitter sophomore Megan Owen (Spokane, Wash.) scored on Rivera's fielder's choice and then Clark crossed the plate on another Cardinal error to give the Huskies a 7-0 victory.
The Cardinals had runners reach base in all but one inning, stranding 13 in all as the Husky pitching staff of starter Leslie Scott (Edmond, Okla.) and reliever Ashley Scott (Redding, Calif.) combined to record the team's fourth shutout of he season. Scott picked up her third win of the season, while Boek pitched three innings of relief for her first career save.
Washington, which needs just one more win to match the program's best-ever start, will play its final game of the Seminole Challenge Sunday at 12 p.m. versus No. 22 South Carolina. The Huskies will then play a non-conference game with Florida Atlantic at 2 p.m. The game with the Owls will not count toward the tournament standings.
