OSU Beaten By San Diego

Feb. 9, 2002

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Oregon State's Seth Pietsch added to his string of doubles Saturday afternoon but the Beavers were beaten by San Diego 4-2 in non-league baseball at Cunningham Stadium. The sophomore outfielder had a pair of two-base hits for OSU (2-3 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) and drove in a run but San Diego (8-0, 0-0 West Coast) kept its record perfect by breaking a tie with two seventh-inning runs.

Oregon State and San Diego conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 11 a.m., with Ben Rowe (1-0 record, 0.00 ERA) scheduled to get the pitching start for the Beavers.Pietsch has six hits this season and five of those have been doubles, in his career, 10 of his 15 hits have been for extra bases. He doubled in OSU's first run in the seventh inning Saturday, then scored on Andy Jarvis' single to tie the game at 2-2.

San Diego came back with a pair of runs in its half of the seventh, though, and one of the key hits was a fly to right-centerfield that was lost in the sun. The Beavers stranded five runners, but three of those were in scoring position and OSU had the tying runs on base when the game ended.

'I didn't think we competed at the plate very well at all,' said OSU head coach Pat Casey, whose team was outhit 9-8. 'I thought our pitching was outstanding, we have to be better offensively if we expect to compete in the Pac-10. San Diego is a very solid club ... I thought their guy (Tom Caple) did a nice job of pitching, but there's no way he should have dominated us.'

The Beavers lost an early scoring opportunity in the fourth inning with the game still scoreless. Tom Creighton led off with a triple, but Kerisi Reynolds followed with a bounding shot down the line that third baseman Freddy Sandoval snared and his dive took him right into Creighton, whom he tagged out.

Jake Postlewait took the pitching loss for the Beavers, allowing the two seventh-inning runs, he worked two innings and allowed four hits and no walks. OSU starter Stephen Copeland went 5 2/3 innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out none.

Creighton and Pietsch were both 2-for-4 for the Beavers.
