Wrestling Narrowly Defeated By Cal Poly
Feb. 9, 2002
EUGENE - The University of Oregon wrestling team made a late run to climb out of a hefty deficit, but Cal Poly sealed the victory, 19-15, in the final match of a Pacific-10 wrestling meet Saturday afternoon. Oregon falls to 7-7 overall, 3-4 Pac-10 while Cal Poly improves to 10-7, 5-3.
'I'm disappointed that we didn't come out of this with a win,' Oregon head coach Chuck Kearney said. 'But, the guys continued to wrestle hard top to bottom for the entire duration of the meet.'
For the third consecutive match, Oregon was forced to forfeit at 125 pounds. The Ducks were able to secure wins versus Bakersfield and No. 21 Fresno State on Friday despite giving up those six points. On Saturday, the forfeit proved costly, as Oregon led 6-3 following the heavyweight match, where Eric Webb defeated Clint Walbeck, 4-2.
The lead was short lived as Oregon spotted Cal Poly six points at 125, which gave the Mustangs a 9-6 lead. The Ducks never led again.
Oregon started a late comeback, winning at 149, 157 and 165, which brought it within a point, 16-15. At 174, No. 13 Steve Strange fought of pesky freshman Shane Webster to win 8-5 and secure Cal Poly's victory.
Oregon hosts Oregon State Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
