Arizona Softball Beats Massuchusetts 1-0
Feb. 10, 2002
Jennie Finch struck out a career-high 15 and scattered three hits but it took the international tie-breaker rule for No. 1-ranked Arizona (7-1) to put across a run in its 1-0 extra-innings victory over UMass in Fiesta Bowl softball tournament action early Sunday morning.
With runner Lovie Jung placed on second according to the rule in tournament extra-inning play, Courney Fossatti hit a bunt single to move her to third and after an out, Leneah Manuma's single to left ended the game.
Minutewoman pitcher Kaila Holtz held Arizona to one hit, an infield single by Jackie Coburn, for four innings, then started a fine defensive play in the fifth when UA had the bases loaded. With one out, Jackie Coburn walked, and Allyson Lichtenstein and Jung singled. Holtz turned Courtney Fossatti's ground ball into an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play.
Another defensive play stopped a Wildcat threat in the sixth. Mackenzie Vandergeest led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Manuma. Finch singled up the middle, but Vandergeest was cut down at the plate by UMass centerfielder Emily Robuselli's no-hop throw.
Massachusetts' best threat came in the top of the seventh with two outs. Scooter Wheeler walked and Holtz singled through the left side. But Finch struck out Cahalan to end the inning.
Finch (5-0) won her 45th consecutive game, five short of the NCAA record. Holtz (1-1) gave up eight Wildcat hits but was effective for UMass (3-2).
