Baseball Wins First Game in 2002, 8-5, at Long Beach State
Feb. 10, 2002
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Two-run singles in the fourth by sophomore Michael Moon and junior Travis McAndrews keyed a four-run inning Sunday and the No. 4 USC Trojans defeated the host Long Beach State 49ers, 8-5, to register their first win of the season. The win kept the 49ers from sweeping the Trojans for the first time ever in a three-game series as USC averted what would have been its worst start since 1981 when the Trojans lost three straight.
Freshman J.P. Howell (Sacramento/Jesuit HS) recorded the win in his collegiate debut. Howell went five innings, allowing only one run on three hits. He struck out five and walked only one batter.
The Trojans (1-2) jumped out to the lead in the second on a sacrifice fly by Moon, who went 4-for-4 on the afternoon with three RBI. Long Beach State (2-1) tied the game in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by designated hitter Chris Genung.
USC added two runs in the fifth on an RBI triple by catcher Alberto Concepcion and a sacrifice fly by first baseman Bill Peavey. Concepcion and center fielder Brian Barre each had three-hit performances for the Trojans.
The 49ers rallied in the bottom of the ninth, down 8-2. With a runner at third and two outs, Kris Cox, who replaced McAndrews late in the game, dropped a fly ball by the 49ers' Jeremy Reed that would have ended the game. The three-base error proved costly as freshman reliever Brett Bannister walked the next three batters. With the bases loaded and the winning run at the plate, Bannister got Nick Covarrubias to fly out to right to preserve the victory.
USC will travel to UC Riverside on Tuesday (Feb. 12) for a 6 p.m. game before hosting Baylor at Dodger Stadium next weekend. The games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
