Cal Baseball Defeats Gonzaga, 5-4

BERKELEY, CA - Cal freshman center fielder David Nicholson hit an infield chopper with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring Jeff Dragicevich and giving the Bears a 5-4 victory over Gonzaga Sunday at Evans Diamond. Cal improved to 3-4 on the year, while the Bulldogs fell to 2-4. The Bears had won the first game of the series, 10-2 Friday, but lost to Gonzaga, 7-0, Saturday.
The winning pitcher for Cal was sophomore Matt Brown (1-0), who came in in relief of freshman starter Kyle Crist (3.0 innings, six hits, two runs, one walk, one strikeout) in the fourth inning. Brown went on to pitch 6.0 innings with eight hits, two runs, one walk and one strikeout. The losing pitcher for the Bulldogs was reliever Eric Everson (0-1, 2.3 innings, five hits, two runs, one walk)
Cal had to come from behind to win the rubber match of the three-game series against the Bulldogs. Senior second baseman Carson White got the Bears on the board first with a lead-off homer to center field in the second inning off of Gonzaga starter Errol Simonitsch (5.7 innings, four hits, three runs, three walks, four strikeouts). The Bulldogs came back with two runs in the third off of Crist when John Gebbers had an RBI single and Kevin Richardson hit a sacrifice fly to left. Gonzaga then took a 3-1 lead when Brian Munhall hit an RBI single off of Brown in the fifth inning.
Cal tied the contest, 3-3, in the bottom of the sixth on pinch hitter Chris Grossman's sacrifice fly to left field and an RBI single by Dragicevich. The Bulldogs bounced right back when Gebbers hit a solo home run to left field in the seventh inning that hit off of Bears' left fielder Ben Conley's glove. Finally, Cal was able to win the game when it scored a run in the bottom of seventh on an RBI single be sophomore third baseman Conor Jackson, followed by Nicholson's heroics in the eighth inning. Dragicevich had the key hit in the eighth when he hit a two-out double down the right field line.
Nicholson, Jackson, White and Dragicevich had two hits apiece for the Bears. Gonzaga, which outhit Cal, 14-9, was led by Gebbers and Munhall with three hits apiece.
Cal next travels to Santa Clara, Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m., before hosting a three-game series versus Long Beach State beginning Friday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
Gonzaga: Gebbers, solo home run in the seventh inning.
Cal: White, solo home run in the second inning.
