Cougar Diamond Squad Falls At Northridge
Feb. 10, 2002
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- - Washington State hitters did their part with 12 hits, but the pitching staff could not hold back 22nd-ranked Cal State Northridge in a 17-11 baseball loss Sunday at Matador Field.
Starter Nick Kenyon (0-1) took the loss for WSU (2-1), who captured the first two games against the Matadors in the Cougars' season-opening series. The win went to CSUN (5-2) starter Matthew Larson (2-0), who worked four innings and allowed seven runs, but just four earned. Each team used six pitchers.
'Our pitching caught up with us today after two very good outings Friday and Saturday,' offered WSU head coach Tim Mooney. 'We gave up 12 walks, so when they got hits they almost always had people in scoring position.'
While the Cougars only had two errors Sunday and just three in the series, Mooney didn't feel his defensive players made key plays against the Matadors.
'We didn't make the big plays, key plays that would stop an inning,' he said. 'Saturday we made some big plays that kept them from scoring, but today we didn't seem to come up with the big play when we needed them.'
One player Mooney singled out was freshman Derek Bruce from Lewiston, Idaho, who collected two hits, including his first home run. He drove home four runs to lead WSU. 'Derek broke out today, he got much better swings at the plate, which we knew he could do,' said Mooney.
Tim Arroyo carried the big bat for Northridge. The second baseman drove home seven runs with a three-run home run in the first inning and a grand slam in the sixth. Catcher Jason Allec had a three-run home run in the third for Northridge, while Shaun Larkin, Eric Verbryke and Tim Dorn added solo home runs to the CSUN attack.
CSUN broke on top with three runs in the first and after WSU countered with three in the second, the Matadors sent six runners across home plate in the third for a 9-3 lead. The Cougars battled back with seven runs in the middle three innings, but the host club came right back with six more runs in the sixth to take a commanding 17-10 lead WSU could not overcome.
Jon Baeder and Hecker each had run-scoring singles for WSU in the second inning, while Bruce's home run accounted for WSU's tally in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Hart opened the frame with a home run and Bruce doubled home two runs. Hart doubled home one run in the sixth and Falkenborg's single scored WSU's second run of the inning. In the seventh the Cougars scored their final tally on Hart's groundout.
The Cougars' next series will be a three-game set in Pasco against the Gonzaga Bulldogs, beginning Friday at Columbia Basin College.
