Track and Field Meets Arizona, NAU For Annual Indoor Double Dual Thursday
Feb. 12, 2002
This Week --
Following strong performances at both the Iowa State Classic and the Mountain T's Invitational last weekend, ASU's track and field squad returns to Flagstaff for its annual indoor Double Dual with intrastate rivals Arizona and Northern Arizona, Thursday, Feb. 14, at NAU's Walkup Skydome. Field events are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. MST, with running events to follow at 6 p.m. MST. Arizona's women's team is the only squad ranked in the latest Trackwire Poll, where they sit at No. 2 behind Louisiana State.
Indoor Double Dual History --
The indoor double dual between ASU, Arizona and NAU has been held annually in Flagstaff since 1990. The ASU men are 5-7 against the Wildcats and have won the last four straight including last year's 79-76 victory. Against the Lumberjacks, the ASU men are 3-8-1 overall, falling to NAU by a mere point last year, 77-76, after winning the 1999 and 2000 meetings. ASU's women are 3-8 against Arizona, having lost eight straight after winning the first three meetings (that series began in 1991). The Sun Devil women are 8-4 against NAU, winning last year 91-78.
National Rankings --
Neither ASU's men's or women's track squads have been ranked in the first four Trackwire Top-25 polls for the 2002 indoor season. Last year, the men did not receive a top-25 indoor billing, while the women were ranked as high as 18th in the second poll of the season. In the Team-Power Indoor Rankings, the ASU men are 50th and the women are 54th.
Aguilera, Quinley Lead ASU Teams at Iowa State/Flagstaff --
Junior All-American Lisa Aguilera finished second in the women's 3,000m at the Iowa State Classic last weekend, with an NCAA automatic and school record time of 9:16.23. Improving upon his prep personal best of 24-7.5, Quinley's mark ranks second all-time in ASU indoor long jump history. In his second collegiate meet he finished second only to former ASU long jumper Dwight Phillips, a 2000 Olympian in the event. ASU turned in a total of six NCAA qualifying marks last weekend, including senior Brandon Strong's second-place finish in the men's mile with an NCAA provisional time of 4:04.04. Junior Fasil Bizuneh clocked an NCAA PQ with a 14:13.79 effort in the men's 5,000m, improving his previous school record time of 14:16.07. With those performances coming at the Iowa State Classic, seniors Tony Galaviz and David Wood notched provisional marks back in Flagstaff. Galaviz improved his previous school record time in the 60m hurdles with a first-place time of 7.75 (altitude adjusted), while Wood turned in a mark of 61-2.75 in the men's shot put, good for third in the meet and third on ASU's all-time indoor list. Also winning meet titles at the Mountain T's Invite were senior Candida Coulson (400m, 55.38), sophomore Jodi Smith (high jump, 5-8), sophomore Alvina Begay ('B' mile, 5:18.13 alt.adj.), the women's 4x400m relay team of Coulson, sophomore Seneca Holmes, freshman Cassandra Reed and junior Joni Smith (3:46.74) and the men's 4x400m relay team of freshman Lorenzo Parham, senior Pete Lopez, freshman Eric Bailey and freshman Seth Amoo.
