Byers Tied for Lead After First Round of Taylor Made Waikoloa

Kona, Hawaii - Aaron Byers fired a 5-under 67 and is tied for the lead after the first round of the Taylor Made Waikoloa Intercollegiate, played Wednesday at the 7,074-yard, par 72 Waikoloa Kings' Course.

Byers had an eagle, four birdies 13 pars and only one bogey as he shared the first day lead with Troy Matteson of Georgia Tech, who is the No. 5-ranked individual according to the Feb. 10 Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. The senior from Albany, Ore., played the front nine in 3-under 33 and the back in 2-under 34. The 67 was one off Byers' career low round of 66 that he carded at last spring's Duck Invitational.

As a team, the Ducks were tied for ninth with Rhode Island after the first day, carding a 3-over 291. Oregon was 10 shots back of leader Georgia Tech, the top-ranked team in the country. Stanford was second at 285, followed by Mississippi at 286 and No. 22 Pepperdine at 287.

Sophomore Mike Sica had a 74 for Oregon and was tied for 60th, while junior John Ellis and senior Chris Heniff each had 75s and were tied for 65th.

The second round will be played Thursday with the final round coming on Friday.
