Feb. 13, 2002
TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona junior men's basketball players Jason Gardner and Luke Walton were named NABC/Pontiac Division I first team all-District 15, in voting released Tuesday by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Both players are now eligible for NABC All-America honors, which will be announced at the conclusion of the 2001-02 season.
Gardner, a 5-foot-10, 181-pound guard from Indianapolis, Ind., is averaging 20.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.9 assists through 23 games this season. He averages 37.5 minutes per game and shoots 40.4 percent from the field, including 36.1 percent from three-point range. Gardner has scored in double figures in 21 of 23 games and has tallied five or more assists in 11 of his last 14 games.
A 2001-02 Arizona tri-captain, Gardner has 11 20-point games to his credit this season, including a career-best 34 points on two occasions. He has earned Pac-10 Player-of-the-Week, Fiesta Bowl Classic and Coaches vs. Cancer IKON Classic Most-Valuable-Player honors for his efforts this season.
Walton, a 6-foot-8, 241-pound forward from San Diego, Calif., is averaging 15.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 5.9 assists in 20 games this season. He is shooting 50.4 percent from the floor and leads the team in rebounds and assists. Walton has seven double-doubles and one triple-double to his credit this year and has collected at least six assists in seven of his last nine games.
The Pacific-10 Conference leader in assists per game, Walton is also the only player to be listed among the league's leaders in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals. He would be the first forward to lead the Pac-10 in assists since the league began tracking the statistic in 1974-75.
Gardner, Walton and the ninth-ranked Wildcats (17-6 overall, 10-3 Pac-10) are next in action on Thursday, Feb. 14, at No. 20 UCLA. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. MST and can be seen nationally on Fox Sports Net.
