#9 Softball Splits Doubleheader With Florida

Feb. 14, 2002

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of Florida capitalized on four Husky errors, scoring nine runs to hand the Washington softball team its first loss of the season, 9-4, Thursday at the Florida Softball Stadium. The ninth-ranked Huskies rebounded in the second half of the non-conference doubleheader, winning 8-2 to improve to 11-1 in 2002, while the Gators moved to 3-4 this season.

In the nightcap, the UW broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh with a six-run outburst. The Huskies opened the inning by loading the bases with no outs, before sophomore Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.) ripped a bases-clearing double to right-center field. After an RBI single by sophomore Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.) scored Roach, the UW duo of junior Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) and freshman Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.) knocked back-to-back doubles to drive in two more runs, giving the Huskies an 8-2 win.

Earlier in the game, the UW scored the first run in the second inning when pinch runner Nicki Holt (Camarillo, Calif.) scored on an error by Florida second baseman Jennilee Garner. Three innings later, Husky senior Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.) extended her hitting streak to 12 games with an infield single to score sophomore Shawna Norris (Littleton, Colo.), giving the UW a 2-0 advantage.

The Gators, however, matched the effort with one run in both the fifth and the sixth, the latter of which came on a two-out home run by designated player Bree Berger, the first long ball given up by a Husky pitcher this season.

Washington freshman pitcher Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.) recorded her third complete-game victory of the season to move to 3-0 overall, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out a season-best eight Florida batters.

In the first game of the day, Florida got the Huskies off balance early, scoring two runs on a pair of errors. Washington got the two runs back in the third inning, as Roach and Simpson both singled and eventually scored.

The Gators retook the lead with two more runs in their half of the third inning, before putting up five unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-2 advantage. The UW would get two of the runs back in the sixth inning when Clark lead-off with a solo home run and Holt scored on an infield single by Roach, but the Huskies were unable to overcome the Gators' lead, falling 9-4.

Washington pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) took the loss to fall to 5-1 on the season, while Florida hurler Amanda Knowles earned the win to move to 2-0 in 2002.

The Huskies continue their stay in Gainesville Friday with day one action of the four-team University Centre Invitational. The UW faces Tennessee-Chattanooga at 12 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. match-up with Hofstra.
