Byers Tied for Fifth After Second Round of Taylor Made Waikoloa

Feb. 14, 2002

Kona, Hawaii - Oregon's Aaron Byers continued his solid play Tuesday at the Taylor Made Waikoloa, shooting a 2-over par 74 that left him tied for fifth with three others at 3-under 141 after the second round. The rest of Byers' teammates could not keep up as the Ducks fell from ninth to 21st at the 7,074-yard, par 72 Waikoloa Kings' Course.

Byers, who was the co-leader at 5-under after Wednesday's first round, parred the first nine holes Thursday, but got in trouble with bogeys on the 10th and 12th. The Albany, Ore., native got a stroke back with a birdie on the par-3 15th, but lost a chance for an even par round after suffering a double-bogey 6 on the 16th. Byers salvaged a two-over day by making birdie on the 18th.

Stanford's Philip Rowe charged to the lead with a 5-under 67 that left him at 8-under 136 for the tournament. First round co-leader Troy Matteson of Georgia Tech was a stroke back after carding a 70 Thursday.

The Ducks shot a 305, which was the second-worst round among the 24-team field, to fall 12 places in the standings and out of contention. No. 1 Georgia Tech continued to lead the tournament, shooting a 285 to bring its team total to 10-under 566. Stanford was second at 573, while Nevada was third at 575 and Mississippi and Kansas were tied for fourth at 577.

Junior John Ellis has his second straight 75 for Oregon and was the only Duck other than Byers within three strokes of par. His Two day total of 150 was tied for 74th.

The final round will be played Friday.
