SERIES RECORD: Cal has a 19-17 overall series record against the Long Beach State 49ers...in the last meeting between the two schools, the Bears fell 7-6 in 13 innings Feb. 23, 2001 at Blair Field in Long Beach...the other two games of the three-game series were rained out...

HEAD COACH DAVID ESQUER: The 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Esquer, 36, is in his third season at Cal and has a career record of 63-57 (.525)...he became only the 10th coach in the history of Cal baseball, which began in 1892, when he was hired June 10, 1999...Esquer replaced longtime Bear mentor Bob Milano, who retired May 17, 1999 after 22 years as the Bears head coach and 29 years involved in the Cal baseball program...Esquer came to Berkeley after serving as the top assistant at Pepperdine from 1996-99...prior to working at Pepperdine, he was the No. 2 assistant coach at Stanford under Mark Marquess from 1991-96...a shortstop at Stanford from 1984-87, Esquer was a starter on Stanford's 1987 College World Series championship team, earning All-Tournament honors after hitting .350 with six RBI in Omaha...he also earned All-Pac-10 Southern Division honors as a senior and went on to play professional baseball for four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, California Angels and Milwaukee Brewers organizations...

BEAR NOTES: The California baseball team (4-4) has won three of its last four games, winning two of three over Gonzaga Feb. 8-10 at Evans Diamond (won 10-2, lost 7-0, won 5-4) and defeating Santa Clara, 10-7, Tuesday at Buck Shaw Stadium...the Bears continue to be led by the pitching of senior right-hander Trevor Hutchinson, a third team Preseason All-American in Baseball America...in two starts this season, Hutchinson is 2-0 with an 0.60 ERA and has thrown 15.0 innings with no walks and 18 strikeouts...he has only given up one earned run and opponents are batting .173 against him...Hutchinson currently has 208 career strikeouts, seventh on Cal's all-time career list and 68 strikeouts away from being the school's all-time leader (Doug Weiss, 275 strikeouts from 1955-57)...sophomore third baseman Conor Jackson has been Cal's leader at the plate, batting a team-leading .485 (16-for-33) with two doubles, two triples, three home runs, 12 RBI and a .939 slugging percentage...Jackson has hit safely in every game this season and has had multiple hit games in the six of the team's eight contests...earlier this season, he hit a home run in three consecutive games, including his first collegiate home run Feb. 8 versus Gonzaga...as a team, Cal is predicted by the Pac-10 Coaches to finish fourth in the conference and Baseball America predicts the Bears to be one of the five Pac-10 teams (Stanford, USC, Arizona State, Washington, Cal) to make NCAA postseason...Collegiate Baseball selected Cal 38th in its preseason poll...

LONG BEACH STATE: The No. 21 ranked (Collegiate Baseball) Long Beach State 49ers, coached by Mike Weathers (1st year as head coach at Long Beach State, 2-1, .667), opened their 2002 season last weekend going 2-1 hosting USC (won 2-0, won 7-4, lost 8-5)...top hitters for the 49ers are senior third baseman Edgar Varela (.500, 0 HR, three RBI), senior outfielder Chris Wright (.444, 0 HR, 0 RBI) and sophomore catcher Todd Jennings (.333, 0 HR, two RBI)...Long Beach State's tentative pitching rotation is sophomore left-hander Abe Avarez (1-0, 0.00 ERA), junior right-hander Daniel Eisentrager (1-0, 5.40 ERA) and freshman right-hander Jered Weaver (0-1, 13.50 ERA)...in 2001, the 49ers finished 35-23 overall, 11-7 (third) in the Big West Conference and 0-2 at the Stanford NCAA Regional...
