Cougars Drop Close One To Bulldogs Despite 15 Hits
Feb. 15, 2002
PASCO, Wash. -- Washington State out-hit Gonzaga 15-9, but allowed four unearned runs on three errors in an 8-7 baseball loss Friday at Columbia Basin College in Pasco.
Starter Eddie Bonine (1-1) scattered six hits and four earned runs, but gave up three home runs over 6 1/3 innings and took the loss for WSU (2-2). Greg Brooks (1-0) allowed two runs and three hits in three innings of work to notch the win and Erik Dworkis got his first save of the season for Gonzaga (3-4).
'Eddie Bonine pitched well,' WSU head coach Tim Mooney said. 'But the long ball really hurt us today. At one point they had five hits, but three were home runs.'
The Cougars also committed three errors, after committing just two last weekend against Cal State Northridge.
'We had a couple errors - (Centerfielder Evan) Hecker lost the ball in the sun and a run scored was one,' Mooney said. 'We really need to clean up on things like that.'
As was the case against the Matadors last week, the WSU bats were once again lively. Hecker was three-of-five at the plate, driving in two runs. Shortstop Derek Bruce was two-for-four on the afternoon with a home run, and third baseman Jeffrey LaRue was three-of-four with one home run and two RBI.
'Offensively, we had a good approach,' Mooney said. 'We always stress having a balanced order up and down the lineup. We don't want one big guy doing all the work.'
Gonzaga got a big day from first baseman Nate Gold. Gold slugged two homers off Bonine and was three-of-five on the day. Gold's home run in the first inning gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead and his second homer, a solo shot in the sixth, brought the Bulldogs to within one run, 5-4.
Kemp Quackenbush and Eric Roland each added two hits, while Brian Munhall had the other home run for the Bulldogs.
WSU responded to GU's early lead by notching three runs in the bottom of the second. Jon Baeder's single drove in LaRue and Hecker's double to right field scored Baeder and Justin Hart. After GU tied the game in the top of the fourth, LaRue scored on a fielder's choice to give WSU a 4-3 lead. The Bulldogs tied the game at four in the top of the sixth, but WSU again regained the advantage in its half of the inning on Bruce's second home run of the season.
The Bulldogs added three runs in the top of the seventh and another in the top of the eight to take an 8-5 lead. WSU scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run home run by LaRue, but the Cougars could not plate any runs in the ninth.
