Husky Gymnasts Upset No. 16 Arizona State

Feb. 15, 2002

Seattle, WA - The Washington women's gymnastics team posted its highest score of the year to defeat 16th-ranked Arizona State 196.575 to 194.800 in a dual meet at Bank of America Arena. Husky gymnasts won all four events and were led by sophomore Emily Pritchard who captured the all-around with a career-high score of 39.675.

Washington's team score was the fifth highest in school history and Pritchard's all-around mark tied as the third best all-around performance by a Husky.

Pritchard won the vault with a career high score of 9.950 and took the beam title with another career high of 9.925. She tied teammate Kim Claussen for second on bars with a 9.900 and also finished as the runnerup on floor exercise with a 9.900.

Husky freshman Carly Dockendorf took top honors on bars (9.925) and floor (9.950). Her bars score was a new career high. Dockendorf scored 39.550 in the all-around. Friday's meet marked just the second time she has competed in all four events. Last week, in her first go as an all-arounder, she scored 38.525, including a UW freshman record with a 9.975 on floor.

The Huskies had gymnasts hit for career high scores a total of 13 times during the meet. Washington managed to post 10 scores of 9.9 or higher. Arizona State's only gymnast to hit that mark was Maggie Germaine, who tied Tanya Powers for second on the vault with a 9.9.

Washington recorded season-high team scores to win all four events and the Huskies needed those high marks to hold onto a narrow lead entering the meet's final rotation.

Arizona State grabbed the early lead in the meet, scoring 49.025 on bars while the Huskies managed 48.900 on vault. Washington overtook the Sun Devils when the two teams switched events. The Huskies scored 49.225 on bars while Arizona State managed just 48.725 on vault. The Sun Devils' hopes suffered a blow when Carla DeMartini, vaulting in the number-four spot, missed the horse on her attempt and scored 7.0.

The Huskies used a solid beam routine, counting just one fall, to score 49.125 during the third rotation. Meanwhile, ASU scored 49.050.

Washinton took advantage of a pair of falls by ASU gymnasts on beam to pull away during the final event. The Huskies scored 49.325 on score to just 48.000 on beam for the Sun Devils.

The victory improved the Huskies record to 3-3 while Arizona State now stands 4-3-1 this season.

Washington's next meet will be Feb. 22 at Arizona.
