Men's Golf Drops Back In The Pack In Hawaii

Feb. 15, 2002

WAIKOLOA, Haw. - -

The Oregon State men's golf team shot a second-round 300 at the TaylorMade/Waikoloa Intercollegiate on Thursday and fell back into a three-way tie for 18th with an overall score of 593 in the field of 24.

The Beavers had a difficult time adjusting to the windy conditions on Thursday at the par-72, 7,074-yard Kings' Course, but sophomore David Williams managed to cut 11 strokes off his opening round score and carded a 74 to lead the Beavers in the second round.

David Yarnes still leads OSU overall with a total of 1-over 145 after shooting a second round 75. He is tied for 30th with 18 holes to play Friday.

Michael Jurgensen is three shots back of Yarnes at 148 after carding a 76 on Thursday and is tied for 56th.

Todd Deacon played the second round in 75, matching his opening round score to tie for 74th.

Chance Holmes stands at 155 after a 79 in the second round, and Williams' total is 159.

OSU walks a fine line between being in contention and being in the second half of the pack, and has typically been a few shots away throughout the season.

'We're right there,' OSU coach Brian Watts said. 'We need to eliminate the double-bogeys and 'others' from our scores though. For some reason, we haven't been able to make just a bogey, and it turns into a double or triple.

'The wind picked up today, but that's no excuse. We've still got to put it into play,' Watts said.

Georgia Tech opened up a seven-stroke lead over Stanford with a 10-under 566 after leading the Cardinal by four shots in the opening round.

Stanford's Phillip Rowe owns the top spot on the individual leaderboard with an 8-under 136 - good for a one-stroke lead over the Yellowjackets' Troy Matteson.
