Softball Sweeps First Day of UNLV Classic

LAS VEGAS - The second-ranked and undefeated UCLA softball team improved its 2002 record to 11-0 on Friday at the Desert Breeze Softball Complex, defeating Texas Tech by a 13-2 margin in five innings, and downing No. 13 Alabama 9-1.
In the opener, the Bruins batted around in both the first and third innings, and enjoyed four home runs on the day. Stacey Nuveman led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 on the morning, and finishing just a double shy of hitting for the cycle. UCLA's other three home runs were from Tairia Mims, Claire Sua and Toria Auelua.
Kiera Goerl earned the win for UCLA, pitching three innings and striking out two. Claire Sua finished out the game for the Bruins in her collegiate debut in the circle.
In the second game of the day, the Bruins downed No. 13 Alabama by a 9-1 margin, finishing the day by batting around in the seventh inning while scoring five runs. Ten of the Bruins 12 hits on the day were singles, with extra-base hits coming from Stephanie Ramos (double) and Amanda Freed, who had a leadoff triple in the fifth inning. Freed earned the win, improving to 5-0, and striking out five while allowing just three hits.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday, with a 10 am game against BYU and a 5:30 pm game against No. 12 Nebraska.
