Arizona Men's Swimming and Diving Fall to Arizona State

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona women's swimming and diving team closed out the regular season this afternoon with a victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils, 199-101. The Wildcat men fell to the Sun Devils 171.50-128.50. The meet took place at the Sun Devil Aquatics Center in Tempe, Ariz.
On the women's side of the meet the Cats placed first in 14 out of 16 events. The women opened up the day with a victory in the 200y medley relay (1:45.59). Junior All-American Beth Botsford led the relay team and was followed by sophomore Jessica Wagner and All-American seniors Amy Bouta and Jenny Vanker. Vanker, senior All-American Sarah Tolar, freshman Jessica Hayes and sophomore Kristen Brennan closed out the day for the Cats with a win in the 200y free relay as they clocked a time of 1:32.86.
Individually for the women Arizona placed first, second, third and fourth in two events, the 200y backstroke and the 200y IM. In the 200y back Botsford (2:01.73) placed first followed by juniors Julie Manitt (2:03.93), April Martin (2:06.41) and Lindsey Highstrom (2:07.26). For the 200y IM Tolar (2:02.67) placed first and was followed by freshmen Artemis Daphnis (2:04.31), Hayes (2:04.96) and Emily Mason (2:06.12).
For the Arizona men All-American senior Roland Schoeman was victorious in two events, the 50y free (19.74) and the 100y free (44.00). Sophomore Greg Owen also won two individual events in the 100y and 200y breaststroke. Owen touched the wall at 56.55 in the 100y breast and 2:03.09 in the 200y breast. Arizona swimmers placed one, two in the 200y butterfly. All-American Junior Jeff Dash won the event with the time of 1:47.45 and All-American sophomore Juan Veloz placed second with the time of 1:48.18.
In the diving events Wildcat sophomore Claire Febvay finished in first place on the one-meter, scoring 267.68 points. While the men went one, two, three on the one-meter. All-American senior Omar Ojeda placed first (338.40) followed by fellow senior Ruben Vaca (325.58) and sophomore Alex Vollelunga (208.00). In the three-meter Febvay placed third with 242.70 points. For the men sophomore Josh Anderson placed first, scoring 352.05 points and Vaca placed second, scoring 347.93 points.
The Arizona diving squad prepares for the Pac-10 Diving Championships which will take place in Tucson, Ariz. at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center Feb. 28 - March 2. During that same time the Arizona women's swimming team will be in Long Beach, Calif. for the Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships. The men's swimming team will next participate in the Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championships March 7-9 also in Long Beach.
