Baseball Beats British Columbia, 9-4

PHOENIX, Ariz. - An eighth-inning grand slam from freshman Nick Batkoski (Federal Way) highlighted theWashington baseball team's 9-4 win over the University of British Columbia Saturday in anon-counting exhibition game at the Rawlings Spring Training Tournament at PapagoPark.
Neither the win nor the individual statistics in the game counted as the UBC team is fromoutside of the United States.
Washington used six different pitchers in the game, including three freshmen. Freshmanlefty David Dowling (Kirkland/Juanita) started and threw two innings to get the victory. Heallowed only one baserunner, who reached on an error, but faced the minimum six hittersafter picking the runner off.
Freshmen Will Fenton (Kingston/North Kitsap) and Jamie Hawkins (Bainbridge) workedtwo innings each while junior Brian Barton (Richland), senior Zack Daniels(Fircrest/Charles Wright) and senior Greg Colburn (Billings, Mont./Skyview) each threwone inning.
Batkoski's grand slam was part of a six-run eighth. Junior Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) led off that inning with a home run and also drove in a run in his second at bat ofthe frame.
UBC starter Jeff Brewer threw five innings in the loss. Shortstop Adam Campbell was theonly Thunderbird to record more than one hit, with a single and a double.
The Huskies finish up their first weekend of the 2002 season Sunday when they faceMissouri at 12:30 p.m. at Municipal Stadium.
