Cal Baseball Shutout By No. 21 Long Beach State, 9-0

BERKELEY, CA - Three Long Beach State pitchers combined to shutout Cal, 9-0, Saturday at Evans Diamond. The No. 21 ranked 49ers improved to 4-1, while the Bears fell to 4-6. Long Beach State leads to series 2-0, defeating Cal, 8-1, Friday. The Bears have only scored one run in the last 18 innings, missing scoring opportunities in the fourth, fifth, sixth and ninth innings.
The winning pitcher for Long Beach State was starter Daniel Eisentrager (2-0), who pitched 6.0 innings with five hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Chris Demaria (2.0 innings, two hits, one strikeout) and Brian Anderson (1.0 inning, one hit, one walk) also threw for the 49ers. The losing pitcher for Cal was starter Brian Montalbo (0-2, 5.0 innings, seven hits, five earned runs, three walks, three strikeouts).
The leading hitter for Long Beach State was Chris Wright, who went 2-for-5 with five RBI, including a three-run homer in the eighth inning. Jeremy Reed and Todd Jennings also had two hits apiece for the 49ers. Sophomores David Weiner and Jeff Dragicevich had two hits apiece for Cal. For Weiner, it was his first hit since the 2000 season, as he sat out the 2001 season with an injured left shoulder. He had a double in the sixth inning and a single in the eighth.
Cal will host the third game of the three-game series versus Long Beach State Sunday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
