Feb. 16, 2002
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - -
Oregon State's 18th-ranked softball squad continued its dominant play this season with a convincing 8-0 triumph over Texas Tech at the UNLV Softball Classic on Saturday.
The Beavers improved on their best start in school history by moving to 11-1 on the year.
OSU opened up a 2-0 lead with runs in the first and third innings against Texas Tech, and then blew it open against the 3-10 Red Raiders with four in the fourth and two more in the sixth to force the end of the game via the eight-run rule.
Brynnen Guthrie continued her impressive hitting this season with a 3-for-4 day from the plate - a performance that included three RBI and four runs scored. Guthrie, a sophomore second baseman, is now batting at a .452 clip and has four homeruns after knocking one out in Friday's 4-3 win over Kansas. She also leads the team with 16 RBI on the year.
Monica Hoffman and Crystal Draper combined to shut out the Red Raiders on just two hits. Draper came on in the second after Hoffman faced one batter in the frame and earned the win by pitching the final five innings and striking out seven. Each pitcher gave up one hit.
OSU wraps up its play in the UNLV Softball Classic when it takes on No. 12 Nebraska at 8:30 Sunday morning. Nebraska will be the highest ranked opponent OSU has faced this year.
