Pitching, Power Win For OSU

Feb. 16, 2002

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Ben Rowe and three relievers combined on a four-hitter for Oregon State in a 6-2 win over Western Kentucky in non-league baseball Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Chris Biles and Seth Pietsch both homered, tripled and drove in two runs each for OSU (3-4 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10).

The Beavers wrap up their trip Sunday at 12 noon against San Diego State. The game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340) or via the OSU athletics website at www.osubeavers.com

Against Western Kentucky (3-2, 0-0 Sun Belt), Rowe pitched three-hit ball over six innings, giving up just one run while walking one and striking out two. Biles and Pietsch hit back-to-back run-scoring triples in the bottom of the sixth to break what had been a 1-1 tie.

Jake Postlewait, Don Stykel and Jared Sanders then pitched the final three innings to hand Rowe his second win of the year. Andy Jarvis also had a big day at the plate for the Beavers, going 3-for-4 and driving in a run.

'Ben Rowe gave us an outstanding start,' Casey said of the sophomore righthander, who is 2-1 with a 1.84 earned run average. 'Then Don Stykel and Jared Sanders gave us the relief we needed. And Chris Biles really picked us up when we'd been struggling to score runs.

'We'd talked about the people who have been in our program needing to respond, and they did today.'

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, OSU had Brian Barden at first with two out. Biles drove a pitch from Hilltopper righthander Ryan Bicandoa into the gap in right-center for a triple that put the Beavers up 2-1, Pietsch followed with a triple to the same spot and Jarvis added a run-scoring single to make it 4-1.

WKU scratched back within 4-2 in the top of the seventh, using two walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch for a run. Then it was again Biles' turn, as he returned momentum to the Beavers by starting the bottom of the eighth with a home run to right-centerfield, OSU added a run later in the inning on Paul Richie's bases-loaded groundout.

The Beavers, whose Saturday output matched the six runs they scored all last weekend in being swept in a three-game series at San Diego, outhit the Hilltoppers 12-4.

'We knew we had to start scoring some runs, and we did' said Pietsch, who began the Beavers' breakout with a homer to left-center to start the second inning. 'We had some people come up with clutch hits all day long. We made a lot better contact than we did last weekend.'

Going into Saturday's game, five of Pietsch's six hits had been doubles. After his homer and triple Saturday, seven of his eight hits this season have gone for extra bases, in the sophomore's career, 12 of his 17 hits have gone for extra bases.

'I want to break the school record for doubles,' Pietsch grinned. 'And to do that, you've got to hit the ball hard. Not go for home runs, just hit the ball hard.'

The homer and triple didn't get him closer, though, to the mark of 19 set by A.J. Marquardt in 1993 and matched by Joe Gerber in 2000.

'I'll take 'em anyway,' Pietsch laughed.
