Softball Perfect On Day 2 Of UNLV Classic
Feb. 16, 2002
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Timely hitting, precise pitching and a solid defensive effort led to an 8-3 upset over No. 13 Alabama for the Oregon softball team in its opening game at the UNLV Classic Saturday morning. In the nightcap, the Ducks defeated Kansas, 9-7, to improve to 6-3 overall this season and 3-1 at the tournament.
Against Kansas, senior Connie McMurren went the distance, picking up her first win of the season. McMurren struck out three and gave up six hits.
'Kansas kept chipping away at the lead and we really showed resiliance,' Oregon head coach Brent Rincon said. 'We were fortunate to get off to a good start and got clutch pitching from Connie.'
Lakeesha Eversley hit her second home run of the day against the Jayhawks and was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Alyssa Laux was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Lynsey Haij was 2-for-4, including a triple and three RBI.
Against No. 13 Alabama, freshman Lindsay Kontra (3-1) pitched the whole way for the game and gave up just one earned run to pick up her second upset of the season.
Offensively, Oregon's bats were on fire for the second consecutive game. The Ducks had 11 hits after putting up a 13 hit performance in their win over Central Michigan last night. Eversley broke the game open in the fourth inning with a three run home run. Eversley finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Senior Kristi Hall hit her first home run of the season - also in the fourth inning - and was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Amber Hutchison and Laux also sparked the Ducks offense, each finishing the game 2-for-3.
'We are hitting the ball extremely well right now and the hits are coming at the right time,' Oregon head coach Brent Rincon said. 'And Lindsay Kontra continued to put pressure on a very good Alabama team and really took them out of their game.'
Oregon plays Kent State at noon tomorrow in its final game of the tournament.
