Baylor Completes Sweep With 3-1 Win Against Baseball
Feb. 17, 2002
LOS ANGELES - First baseman Mike Huggins' two-run single to center with two strikes in the top of the eighth was the difference Sunday and the No. 25 Baylor Bears completed the three-game series sweep against the No. 6 USC Trojans, 3-1, at Dodger Stadium. The last time the Trojans were swept in a series was last year at Stanford (March 9-11).
USC (2-5) took the lead in the first when Brian Barre scored from third on a balk call against Baylor (4-3) starter Justin Taylor. Baylor head coach Steve Smith was ejected following an argument after the call was made. Taylor went 7 2/3 innings, allowing only one run on five hits with four strikeouts to register the win for the Bears.
Freshman starter Brett Bannister had another effective outing for the Trojans, throwing 5 1/3 scoreless innings on three hits, five strikeouts and two walks. He had to leave the game in the sixth after getting hit by an Eric Errante line drive on his right hand in the previous inning. Bannister will have x-rays performed tomorrow and is listed as day-to-day.
USC reliever Jordan Olson had two outs in the eighth until allowing a walk to Paul Richmond and a double to Jared Clements. Huggins hit Olson's pitch up the middle to score Richmond and pinch-runner Chad Craig for the go-ahead runs. Baylor added its third run in the ninth when Paul Witt was picked off second base, but Olson's throw sailed over shortstop Michael Moon into center field to score Witt.
USC will travel to UCLA for a non-conference series, beginning on Friday (Feb. 22) at 5 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium. All three games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com. Note: Tuesday's game originally scheduled at San Diego State has been moved to Monday (March 18) at 6 p.m.
