No. 3 Softball Improves To 4-0 At Campbell/Cartier Classic

Feb. 17, 2002

POWAY, Calif. - No. 3 Stanford softball continued its strong showing at the Campbell/Cartier Classic on Saturday, recording two more wins to improve its overall mark to 9-0. The Cardinal slipped past Utah State 7-3 in the opening contest before coasting to a 9-0 five-inning shutout victory over San Diego State in the nightcap.

Sophomore Jessica Allister (Nacogdoches, Texas) drove in a career-high five runs to lead Stanford (9-0) to a 7-3 victory over Utah State in its first game of the afternoon. The Cardinal broke through early in the top of the first when Sarah Beeson (Tucson, Ariz.) drove in Robin Walker (La Palma, Calif.) with an RBI single. With the bases loaded and one out, Allister singled up the middle to drive in two of her five runs and put Stanford up 3-0. Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, Calif.) came around to score on junior Cassi Brangham's (Clovis, Calif.) fielder's choice, completing the four-run Cardinal onslaught.

Utah State (1-7) would get on the board in the home half of the inning, tacking on a run following an RBI double to cut the margin to 4-1. But the Cardinal would strike again in the top of the fifth when Allister rocketed a three-run homerun over the left field fence, giving Stanford a 7-1 cushion. The Aggies tallied two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back singles to round out the scoring.

LeCocq earned her third win of the year on the mound for Stanford, striking out two in five innings of work. Freshman Elizabeth Bendig (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched the final two frames.

The second game, a 9-0 shutout win over host San Diego State (6-7), featured additional fireworks from Stanford's sophomore catcher, as Allister's second home run of the day- this one of the two-run variety- gave Stanford a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Cardinal added another score in the top of the third when Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, Calif.) scored on Kira Ching's (San Lorenzo, Calif.) groundout, making it 3-0.

Stanford would break the game open in the top of the fourth, erupting for six runs in the inning en route to the mercy-rule victory. Cassi Brangham's sacrifice fly scored LeCocq for Stanford's fourth run of the game. After Meghan Sickler (Houston, Texas) singled, Walker doubled down the left field line to score Leah Nelson (Oakland, Calif.) to make it 5-0. Mendoza then followed with a two-run single, which plated Sickler and Walker for a 7-0 Cardinal lead. Beeson then singled and advanced to second on an errant throw, while Mendoza moved up to third. Ching then roped a base hit, scoring Mendoza to increase the Stanford advantage to 8-0. Allister, who finished 4-7 with two runs scored and eight RBI overall on the day, drove in Beeson for the ninth Cardinal run later in the inning to cap the scoring.

Tori Nyberg (Belmont, Calif.) hurled five shutout innings for her fifth win of the year, while scattering two hits, walking two and striking out seven.

Stanford concludes play at the Campbell/Cartier Classic on Sunday when it battles New Mexico at 2:30 p.m.
