UCLA Places First At University of California Invitational
Feb. 17, 2002
Berkeley, Calif. - The 10th-ranked UCLA gymnastics team placed first at the University of California Invitational in Berkeley, scoring a 194.825. Host California was second with a 192.825, followed by UC Davis (190.55) and UC Santa Barbara (185.5).
The Bruins competed without All-Americans Onnie Willis and Kristin Parker, who both sat out due to aggravated ankles, but their depth showed when several athletes recorded career-best scores. Sophomore Jamie Williams was 3-for-3 on the afternoon, recording career-highs on vault (9.525), beam (9.8) and floor (9.825). Senior Valerie Velasco scored a career-best 9.825 as the leadoff on bars, helping to set the table for career-highs marks from Michelle Conway (9.675) and Doni Thompson (9.975). On her 21st birthday, Thompson received her first-ever perfect 10 mark from one judge (the other gave her a 9.95). Conway also scored a career-best 9.9 on beam, and Alyssa Beckerman tied her best mark on floor with a 9.875. Jeanette Antolin, who just rejoined the squad on Wednesday, recorded a 9.7 on vault to place second in her first meet back.
The meet wouldn't be complete, however, without another perfect 10 from Jamie Dantzscher. The sophomore from San Dimas, Calif. recorded her fifth consecutive 10.0 on floor. It was the 13th perfect 10 of her career and the sixth 10 she has received in as many meets (she also has a 10 on vault from Jan. 13).
Dantzscher took home first place honors on floor and tied with Thompson for first on bars with a 9.975. Beckerman and Conway tied for first on beam with identical scores of 9.9. Malia Jones placed second in the all-around with a season-best 38.825.
'We came up here with a plan to compete everyone so that we would be able to rest some people,' said UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field. 'It's really reassuring from a team standpoint to see everyone do their job and to see our student-athletes come out and hit.'
The Bruins will next host Oregon State on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7:00 pm.
