Women's Tennis Falls to No. 44 Arizona 5-2

EUGENE, Ore. - The Ducks finished the first weekend of Pac-10 play sweeping Arizona and Arizona State's doubles squads, but ultimately fell to both schools. Doubles duo Ester Bak and Janice Nyland denied wins to both Wildcat and Sun Devil doubles teams. The pair defeated Arizona's Maja Mlakar and Debbie Larocque 9-7 at No. 1 doubles and handled Sun Devils Adria Engle and Dora Krstulovic 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.

'I was pleased we carried the doubles,' said Oregon head coach Jack Griffin. 'I'm more than proud to sweep the Arizona schools.'

In singles competiton, senior Vickie Gunnarsson earned Oregon's lone singles victory over Wildcat Diane Hollands, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Davina Mendiburu lost a hard-fought match versus Arizona's Debbie Larocque, 6-2, 3-6, 5-7.

'We competed very well, but at the end of matches we gave away too many points,' said Griffin.

Up next, the Ducks take on unranked Nevada on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 5 p.m. at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene.
