SERIES RECORD: Cal has a 1-0 overall series record against the Boston College Eagles...in the only meeting between the two schools, the Bears won 13-9 in late May-early June, 1920 at Boston College...

HEAD COACH DAVID ESQUER: The 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Esquer, 36, is in his third season at Cal and has a career record of 64-59 (.520)...he became only the 10th coach in the history of Cal baseball, which began in 1892, when he was hired June 10, 1999...Esquer replaced longtime Bear mentor Bob Milano, who retired May 17, 1999 after 22 years as the Bears head coach and 29 years involved in the Cal baseball program...Esquer came to Berkeley after serving as the top assistant at Pepperdine from 1996-99...prior to working at Pepperdine, he was the No. 2 assistant coach at Stanford under Mark Marquess from 1991-96...a shortstop at Stanford from 1984-87, Esquer was a starter on Stanford's 1987 College World Series championship team, earning All-Tournament honors after hitting .350 with six RBI in Omaha...he also earned All-Pac-10 Southern Division honors as a senior and went on to play professional baseball for four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, California Angels and Milwaukee Brewers organizations...

BEAR NOTES: The California baseball team (5-6) won one of three games last week (Feb. 15-17) against No. 21 ranked Long Beach State at Evans Diamond (lost 8-1, lost 9-0, won 4-3)...senior second baseman Carson White, an All-Pac-10 selection last season, got the game-winning RBI for Cal Sunday with a no-out single over the right fielder's head in the bottom of the ninth...White has continued his hot hitting from last year, entering the week on a nine-game hitting streak, batting .350 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI...another top hitter for the Bears is sophomore third baseman Conor Jackson, who is hitting a team-leading .422 (19-for-45) with three doubles, two triples, three home runs, 13 RBI, a .778 slugging percentage and a 447 on-base percentage...Jackson has hit safely in every game this season and has had multiple hit games in the six of the team's 11 contests...earlier this season, he hit a home run in three consecutive games, including his first collegiate grand slam Feb. 8 versus Gonzaga...on the mound, the Bears are led by senior right-hander Trevor Hutchinson, a third team Preseason All-American in Baseball America...in three starts this season, Hutchinson is 2-1 with an 2.35 ERA and has thrown a team-high 23.0 innings with a team-best 27 strikeouts...opponents are batting .185 against him and he currently has 217 career strikeouts, seventh on Cal's all-time career list and is 59 strikeouts away from being the school's all-time strikeout leader (Doug Weiss, 275 strikeouts from 1955-57)...as a team, Cal is predicted by the Pac-10 Coaches to finish fourth in the conference and Baseball America predicts the Bears to be one of five Pac-10 teams (Stanford, USC, Arizona State, Washington, Cal) to make NCAA postseason...Collegiate Baseball selected Cal 38th in its preseason poll...
