The Facts
The USC women's basketball team (14-11, 10-6 Pac-10), still fighting for position among the top four Pac-10 teams, hosts conference champion and No. 2-ranked Stanford (26-1, 16-0 Pac-10) on Friday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. at the Sports Arena. On Sunday, Feb. 24, the Women of Troy play their final regular season game against California (7-18, 2-14 Pac-10) at 1 p.m. at the Sports Arena. The USC-Cal game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports West. Both games can be heard on KMPC-AM 1540 and at www.usctrojans.com. The Trojans are coming off a 67-60 loss at Arizona State on Feb. 14 and a 71-64 win at Arizona on Feb. 16.

Previous Game Results
vs. Arizona - After taking a 21-point lead into halftime, USC had to withstand a last-minute Arizona run to defeat the Wildcats, 71-64, in Tucson on Feb. 16. The Women of Troy went up by an 11-2 spread in the first four minutes of the game. Arizona came to within five several times over the next four minutes, but USC used 12-1 and 15-6 runs to enter the break with a 44-23 lead. The Wildcats came out with intensity in the second half and opened the period with nine unanswered points but only managed to come within 12 (44-32) in the first seven minutes despite holding the Trojans scoreless. Rachel Woodward ended the USC drought with a layup at 12:48, and eventually USC fought back out to a 19-point (63-44) lead with 5:02 left in the game. That was when the Cats went on a 20-3 run of their own over the next four-and-a-half minutes. That spurt was highlighted by three 3-pointers in a 20-second span thanks to three consecutive USC turnovers. Down only 66-64 with 36 seconds left in the game, Arizona was unable to get any other shots to drop after that, as USC went 5-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win. Aisha Hollans had 19 points and six rebounds and Woodward added 17 points and seven rebounds.

vs. Arizona State - USC was beat at its own game as Arizona State dominated on the boards in a 67-60 victory over the Women of Troy on Thursday, Feb. 14, in front of 1,693 at Tempe's Wells Fargo Arena. The Women of Troy were led by Ebony Hoffman and Rachel Woodward who contributed 13 and 14 points, respectively, but no player finished with more than four rebounds. ASU outrebounded USC, 34 to 24, while both teams shot above 48 percent from the field. Despite starting off strong offensively, the Women of Troy fell behind by the 10-minute mark in the first half after committing four consecutive turnovers. In addition to the Trojans' inability to create on their own possessions, USC was also unable to stop ASU's Melody Johnson who scored 16 points in the first half for the Sun Devils. USC shot 52.2 percent from the field but committed 13 turnovers and entered the break down 35-27. To start the second half, the Women of Troy used a 19-12 run to tie the score, 47-47, at 10:58 following a Tiffany Elmore layup. The Sun Devils reclaimed the lead with two made free throws on the next possession and never looked back.

Senior Salute
This week's contests will be the final home games for seniors Tiffany Elmore and Carmen Krause. Elmore and Krause were members of head coach Chris Gobrecht's first official recruiting class at USC in 1998.

Elmore exploded onto the Pac-10 scene as a freshman finishing 13th in conference and second on the team in scoring. She was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman team and in the following years would also earn All-Pac-10 honors. This season, on Dec. 30 at Stanford, she became the 17th player in USC history to collect 1,000 career points. To date, she has accounted for 1,051 career points. In her four-year career, Elmore has averaged 10.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

Krause has enjoyed her most successful season this year as a full-time starter for the Women of Troy. She earned her first ever double-doubles this year in consecutive games against Arizona State and Arizona. She surpassed nearly all her career high marks in 2002 with her 21 point, 11 rebound performance on Jan. 17, six assists on Jan. 24 and five steals on Dec. 4. At USC Krause has averaged 4.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and a 75.8 shooting percentage at the line which will likely place her among USC's top-10 free throw shooters.

Common Connections vs. Stanford
USC junior Lauren Smith-Hams and Stanford newcomer Sebnem Kimyacioglu both attended Pinewood Prep School in Los Altos, Calif. The two played together on the varsity squad in 1998 and 1999.

Common Connections vs. Cal
USC's Narbonne High graduates will face two former prep teammates on Sunday (Feb. 24) against the California Golden Bears. Cal junior Amber White graduated from Narbonne in 1999 with Jessica Cheeks and Portia Mitchell, while sophomore Latasha O'Keith graduated with Ebony Hoffman in 2000.

Old Habits Return
For the first time since late December, the Women of Troy put together a win streak by defeating Washington State (Feb. 3) and UCLA (Feb. 9) back-to-back. But after Thursday's loss to Arizona State and Saturday's win over Arizona, the Trojans are back to alternating wins and losses. USC won four consecutive games Dec. 15 through Dec. 28, then alternated wins and losses for the next 10 contests (a span of six weeks).

Records Don't Tell The Whole Story
Nine of USC's 11 losses this season have been by 10 points or less, including four by four points or less (Texas, BYU, Washington, Arizona). Two of the losses have been in overtime.

Establishing Consistency
After spending the first half of the season rifling through 10 different starting lineups, USC has established consistency in the latter half. The Trojans have used the same starting lineup in the last nine contests and have not utilized the bench as much, using an average of eight players a game.

Much Improved Shooting
One of the biggest feats USC has accomplished this season is improving its typically dismal field goal shooting percentage. Last season, the Women of Troy shot 39.4 percent for the year and finished ninth among Pac-10 teams. In 2002 the Trojans have jumped four spots among Pac-10 standings and rank fourth with a 42.3 average shooting percentage. USC also ranks fourth in scoring offense (71.8) and scoring margin (+6.7).

Down The Stretch
Entering the final stretch of the conference season, with only two games remaining, here are USC's chances in the conference race. Stanford has clinched the title, but the Women of Troy remain two games behind second-place Arizona State and one game behind third-place Washington.

The Best Since 1997
With an 10-6 record so far in the Pac-10 season, this is USC's best conference season since 1997. Under then-head coach Fred Williams, the 1997 Women of Troy were 11-3, with four games remaining in the Pac-10 season (twice falling to Stanford and once to Arizona). That season the Trojans went 13-5 in the Pac-10 and finished third (their best finish since then).

The Last Time...
The last time the Women of Troy finished higher than fifth in the Pac-10 was in 1997... The last time USC finished in second place or higher was in 1994 when the Trojans won the Pac-10 title with a 16-2 conference record... The last time the Trojans finished in third place was in 1997... The last time the Women of Troy finished in second place was in 1993... The Trojans have never finished fourth in the Pac-10.

Not So Good Thursdays, Flawless Saturdays
Days of the week do matter for the Women of Troy. USC is 1-4 this season when playing on Thursdays and 7-0 when playing on Saturdays.

Only Getting Better
Ebony Hoffman fought through some difficult games and difficult losses at the start of the 2002 season, but seems to have hit her stride since the start of conference play. Against nonconference opponents she averaged 12.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, but in conference play she has tallied 14.6 points and 9.6 boards per outing. In the month of November she averaged 12.3 points and 7.0 rebounds... this month she's up to 13.0 points and 9.4 rebounds per contest.

A Growing Crowd In L.A.
USC has played in front of two 3,000+ home crowds this season (Jan. 19 and Feb. 9), marking the largest single-game attendance in nearly 20 years (back in the Cheryl Miller days).

Woodward One Of Top Freshmen
Despite only starting 13 of 24 games, Rachel Woodward has proved why she's one of the top all-around freshmen in the Pac-10 this season. She currently ranks 15th in the Pac-10 in scoring and is 0.2 rebounds short of the top 20 in rebounding. Following are Woodward's contributions to the team as compared to Stanford's T'Nae Thiel and Arizona's Dee-Dee Wheeler - two other newcomers making an large impact this season:

Minpg	Ppg	FG%	3-FG%	FT%	Rpg	Apg	Spg	Bpg
Woodward (forward) 27.4 11.7 45.6 24.1 69.0 5.1 1.8 1.1 0.6
Thiel (forward) 22.1 6.4 52.1 25.0 78.8 5.7 1.4 0.4 0.4
Wheeler (point guard) 28.5 12.8 47.7 41.1 74.6 3.4 3.4 2.0 0.3

Doubling Up
Sophomore forward Ebony Hoffman has posted 10 double-doubles in 23 games this season (one short of the Pac-10 leader). She now has collected 14 career double-doubles.

Leading the Pac-10 In Offensive Boards
The Women of Troy average a conference-best 17.36 offensive rebounds per game and lead second-place UCLA by a 1.2 margin. This has been a strong category for the Trojans in recent years. USC finished second to UCLA last season with a 16.72 average.

Scoring Threat
Sophomore guard Aisha Hollans has scored more than 20 points in nine games this season and has tallied more than 15 points in 15 of 24. She also has posted four double-doubles.

Even Contributions
The Trojans have four players averaging double figures in scoring, Aisha Hollans (17.0 ppg), Ebony Hoffman (13.9 ppg), Rachel Woodward (11.7 ppg) and Tiffany Elmore (10.7 ppg). Four also average more than 5.0 rebounds per game, Hoffman (8.8 rpg), Hollans (6.3 rpg), Carmen Krause (5.5 rpg) and Woodward (5.1 rpg).

No. 2 Stanford (26-1, 16-0 Pac-10) -- Second-ranked Stanford clinched its 11th Pac-10 title in 16 seasons and earned the top seed for the inaugural Pac-10 tournament. The Cardinal is coming off an 81-65 win against Washington, a 76-50 win over Washington State last week and is two wins away from recording its fourth undefeated Pac-10 season. The team leads the conference in scoring (71.8), scoring margin (+19.9), field goal percentage (48.0), field goal percentage defense (35.2), 3-point field goal percentage (39.8), 3-point field goals (7.41), rebounding offense (43.7), rebounding margin (+9.3), blocked shots (5.15), assists (19.85), assist/turnover ratio (1.19) and defensive rebounds (29.37). Forward Nicole Powell leads the Pac-10 in rebounding (9.6), assists (6.0) and defensive rebounds (7.26). Senior Lindsey Yamasaki leads the team and ranks sixth in the Pac-10 in scoring (16.7).

USC-Stanford Series Record -- Friday's game will mark the 44th meeting between these two squads. Stanford owns a 27-16 advantage in the series which began in 1979. What first started with a 13-game USC win streak was reversed in the 90s. Since 1990, the Cardinal have won 23-of-26 games. Prior to last season's final meeting, Stanford owned a 14-game win streak against the Women of Troy. The streak came to an end when the Trojans upset the Cardinal, 62-59, on March 1, 2001, at Maples Pavilion. It marked USC's first win at Maples since the 1992-93 season.

The Last Time... USC came up short down the stretch in a 78-66 loss at No. 6 Stanford on Dec. 30. Ebony Hoffman scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds and Tiffany Elmore added 19 points for the Women of Troy, who had their four-game winning streak snapped. The Women of Troy had to deal with a severe case of food poisoning in addition to the Cardinal. Aisha Hollans, who finished with 10 points, did not start for the first time this season as a result. Stanford held its biggest lead of the game, 25-9, with 7:28 left in the first half. USC rallied to within six before the Cardinal took a 36-28 lead into halftime. Stanford outscored the Women of Troy 16-6 over the final five minutes. Rachel Woodward's turnaround jumper with 5:11 remaining pulled USC within two, 62-60, but a 3-pointer less than a minute later gave the Cardinal some breathing room.
