Feb. 20, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
The Oregon State softball team moved up to No. 11 in the first regular-season USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, released Wednesday.
The Beavers, with a 12-2 record this season, began the year ranked 18th in the preseason poll, but moved up seven spots after winning 12 games in a row and recording their best start in school history at 12-1.
The last time OSU was ranked that high was March 29, 2000, when the Beavers rang in with a 26-6-1 record at the time and were ranked 11th. OSU was ranked as high as 14th on several occasions last year, including the final regular season poll.
The Beavers' highest ranking came in the April 28th poll of 1999, when the 39-16 squad was eighth.
The top of the poll suffered a shakeup, as UCLA (13-0) grabbed the No. 1 ranking after Arizona (12-2) suffered two losses to vacate the top spot. Stanford (9-0) moved into second. UCLA received 24 first-place votes, Stanford got one and Arizona two. Seven of the top 11 programs are Pac-10 schools.
The USA Today/NFCA poll is voted on by 27 NCAA Division I coaches representing all Division I conferences and independents.
