Feb. 20, 2002
LOS ANGELES - On the day that UCLA's softball team took over the top spot in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll, the Bruin softball team posted a doubleheader sweep of UC Riverside. UCLA won the first game of the doubleheader by a 14-0 margin in five innings, then Moreno Valley, CA, native Keira Goerl had 13 strikeouts and pitched a no-hitter en route to UCLA's 6-0 win in game two.
In the first game of the day, the Bruins scored one run in the first inning before batting around in the second inning, scoring eight runs. UCLA batted around again in the fourth inning, putting five additional runs on the board. The Bruins had a home run in each of those innings, as Stacey Nuveman went yard for the sixth time this season in the second inning, and Claire Sua followed suit with her sixth home run of the year in the fourth.
Sua earned the five-inning victory in the circle for UCLA, her first pitching victory of her Bruin career.
The second game of the day, the Bruins posted five runs in the first inning and one run in the fourth en route to the 6-0 win. In the first inning, a walk to Amanda Freed and a single by Nuveman were followed by a three-run home run by junior Tairia Mims, her fourth of the year.
Sophomore pitcher Keira Goerl pitched a no-hitter in the second game of the day. Goerl opened the game with eight strikeouts in the first three innings en route to her second no-hitter of the season, and the 80th no-hitter in UCLA softball history. Goerl struck out 13 and walked three in the game.
Also on Wednesday, the first USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll of the 2002 regular season was released, and the Bruins moved into the top spot in the poll, earning 24 of a possible 27 first-place vote. Stanford is in second place, with Arizona third. The Pac-10 has six of the top-10 teams in the poll, and Oregon State, the seventh conference team that is ranked, stands in 11th place.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday afternoon, with a non-conference doubleheader against Long Beach State at Mayfair Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
