UCLA Falls To Cal, 69-51

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Amit Tamir scored 18 points, and Brian Wethers added15 as California handed No. 25 UCLA its third loss in four games with a 69-51victory over the Bruins on Thursday night.
The Bears (19-6, 10-5 Pac-10) won for the fifth time in six games thankslargely to a conference-leading defense that held UCLA 13 points below itsprevious season low.
Soloman Hughes added 12 points, and Joe Shipp had 11 for the Bears, who wonfor the 16th time in 17 home games this season. Last year at home, Cal defeatedUCLA 92-63, the Bears' largest winning margin in the series that dates to 1922.
Gadzuric made all seven of his shots, but the rest of the Bruins were13-for-40. Kapono, the team's leading scorer at 17.6 per game, hit just threeof nine shots.
Tamir, a 22-year-old freshman from Jerusalem, scored a career-high 39 pointsin his last home game, a 107-103 win over Oregon in double overtime.
With 2:25 left, UCLA's Matt Barnes was ejected for a flagrant foul onShantay Legans. Barnes appeared to throw a forearm to the head of Legans, wholaid face down on the court for more than five minutes. He eventually got tohis feet and was helped into the locker room.
Barnes made just three of 11 shots and finished with eight points. He camein averaging 13.6 points. UCLA's previous low this season was 64 points, donetwice - including a 64-57 win over California on Jan. 26.
This was the fourth straight season the teams split their two meetings.
