Beavers Begin RBI With A Win

Feb. 22, 2002

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Oregon State scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take control and the Beavers went on to beat Michigan 10-4 in the opening game of the Riverside Baseball Invitational on Friday afternoon at Riverside Sports Complex. Ben Rowe earned his third pitching win of the year for OSU (4-5 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10), combining with three relievers on a five-hitter.

Oregon State will play host California-Riverside on Saturday at 4 p.m., the game can be heard on KRKT-AM (990). The Beavers will wrap up the tournament Sunday at 12 noon against San Francisco, and that game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

Against Michigan (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten), OSU used six hits in its fifth-inning burst that turned a 3-1 lead into an 8-1 cushion. Tom Creighton had a run-scoring triple, Brian Barden a two-run single and Andy Jarvis a run-scoring single in the inning.

'Ben pitched well today, and we were able to do some things with runners in scoring position,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'In the big inning we had, we did a good job of situational hitting where we haven't bee good at times this year.

'We're still not swinging the bats as well as we know we can, but if we can pitch and not commit errors, then we can still win games and that happened today.'

The Beavers played their first errorless game of the season, Rowe, a sophomore righthander, worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out five. Ty Kline, Kenny Anderson and Don Stykel polished off the game, with Kline pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings and Stykel retiring the final two hitters.

Rowe wriggled out of trouble after walking a pair of batters in the first inning, but in the third a leadoff double by Jordan Cantalamessa and a run-scoring single by Brock Koman put the Wolverines in front 1-0. After that, though, Rowe retired the next eight hitters as the Beavers went about building their lead.

'It's just a matter of finding your rhythm,' Rowe said. 'For me, the biggest way of getting myself balanced and getting my mechanics right is to find my rhythm.

'Concentration is all it is. You start the game striking out the first guy (as Rowe did) and thinking everything is great, then the game starts spinning on you a bit and your mechanics break down.'

The run-scoring single by Koman was the slap in the face that stopped the spinning.

'Exactly,' Rowe said. 'You leave a changeup up and he hits it pretty hard, and it slaps you. I want to get where it doesn't take leaving that pitch up and him getting that hit to get me to that point.'

OSU responded to the deficit immediately. In the bottom of the third, with two out and runners at second and third, Tom Creighton hit a roller up the third baseline that Michigan pitcher Rich Hill threw past first base, allowing both runners to score for a 2-1 Beaver lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Paul Richie led off with a single and advanced to second on Hill's balk, Kerisi Reynolds then bunted past Hill for a single and third baseman Koman threw the ball away to let Richie score and make it 3-1.

Reynolds was 3-for-4 for the Beavers, while Richie was 2-for-3, Barden 2-for-4 and Creighton was 2-for-5. Seth Pietsch added his sixth double of the season for OSU and Chris Biles also doubled.
