Chris Cordeiro's Complete Game Not Enough For Bruins
Feb. 22, 2002
LOS ANGELES - Chris Cordeiro's one run complete game was not enough this evening as the UCLA Baseball team fell to USC, 1-0 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The only run of the game came on the second pitch of the game, as USC's Brian Barre hit a home run over the right field wall for the deciding run. Matt Chico (1-1) picked up his first win of the season for the Trojans, who snap their three game losing streak to improve to 3-5. The Bruins have lost their third straight one-run game, and their fourth overall to fall to an even 7-7 on the season.
After giving up the home run to Barre, Cordeiro (1-2) gave up a double to Anthony Lunetta, but was able to get out of the inning with a fly ball and a ground out. With two outs in the second, he allowed two hits, but baserunner Kris Cox tried to score from second on Jon Brewster's single, and was thrown out at home. Once he got that out, Cordeiro was dominant for the next four innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three. The Trojans mounted a threat in the seventh but Cordeiro was able to get out of the inning unscathed. With runners on first and second and two outs in the top of the ninth, Cordeiro forced a fielder's choice to complete the game.
While Cordeiro was having the best game of his UCLA career to date, the offense struggled against the freshman Chico. Matt Thayer started the game with a hit, but the Bruins were never able to string together enough hits to get a runner across. The best Bruin chance came in the sixth inning. Thayer walked to start the inning, and after a Ben Francisco out, Thayer advanced to third on Josh Arhart's single to right center. With two on and one out, Casey Janssen flied out and Adam Berry hit into a fielder's choice to leave the Bruins without a run.
UCLA had runners at first and third again in the seventh, but with two outs, Thayer grounded out.
In the bottom of the ninth, Casey Grzecka flied out to center field for the first out, and Trojan Bill Peavey grabbed a Kevin Conlin foul ball at first base for the second out. Pinch hitter Chris Jensen dropped a single into center field, but pinch hitter Billy Susdorf grounded out to end the game.
The Bruins look to end their four game skid tomorrow when they host the Trojans for game two of the three game non-conference series. Game time is at 1:00 p.m.
