Track Teams Open Action in Mountain Pacific Championships

Feb. 22, 2002

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The University of Oregon men's and women's track and field teams turned in strong efforts against many of the top teams from the Big West and Pacific-10 Conferences in Friday's first day action of the Mountain Pacific Championships, held in Northern Arizona University's Walkup SkyDome.

On the men's side, junior Samie Parker scored his first NCAA provisional mark of his career with the fastest time in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash (6.66), just edging Washington State's Anthony Buchanan (second, 6.67). Teammates Cory Gray and Allan Amundson ran season bests of 6.90 and 6.91 to rank 10th and 11th of the 23 entrants. In the 200, Gray added a season best of 22.27 to rank 19th overall.

Redshirt junior Simon Kimata paced the Ducks in the 400 prelims with a season debut (47.88) that ranked sixth among the 26 finishers that also included redshirt senior Ross Krempley (20th, 49.53) and sophomore Brandon Holliday (22nd, 49.95).

In the 60 hurdles prelims, redshirt junior Micah Harris and junior Terry Ellis also advanced to Saturday's final after ranking third and fourth among the 17 entries with clockings of 7.98 and 8.04, respectively.

Redshirt senior Kyley Johnson paced the field event corps with a win and half-inch indoor personal best in the high jump (6-11 1/2), edging redshirt junior teammate Jason Boness on fewer misses (second, 6-11 1/2).

Redshirt junior Adam Kriz raised his personal best in the weight throw by 1 foot, 2 1/2 inches with Friday's mark of 61-7 1/2 and ranked sixth overall.

On the women's side, redshirt juniors Becky Holliday and Niki Reed paced a pole vault-only unit for the Duck women, and placed third and fourth with the same final NCAA automatic-qualifying height (13-7 1/4). The duo turned in clearances at 12-9, 13-3, and 13-7 1/4, before missing their attempts at 13-11 1/4, while sophomore Kirsten Riley placed ninth (12-3 1/2). UCLA's Tracy O'Hara won the competition over Arizona's Amy Linnen on fewer misses at their final clearance height of 13-11 1/4.

'All of our athletes jumped well,' Oregon women's pole vault coach Mark Vanderville said, 'but they also know they can jump better. Niki and Becky had good attempts at 13-11, and will now have two weeks to get ready for nationals.'

The Duck men return for final day action Saturday in the Mountain Pacific Championships, while the women's squad has no other entrants slated for this weekend's meet.
